Summer events at Sewickley Public Library for the week of June 29, 2022

Sewickley Public Library, located at 500 Thorn St., has several upcoming events and programs. For more information, to register for events, or a complete listing of events, visit

The library will undergo scheduled HVAC maintenance work from June 29-July 1. On June 30, all morning programs will be canceled. The Children’s Department will be closed all day. The library parking lot will be unavailable in the morning, and the library will open at 1 pm that day.

The Children’s Department will reopen on July 1.

The library will also be closed on July 4 in observance of Independence Day.


Author and scholar Patricia DeMarco will present “The Ocean Around Us, The Ocean Within Us” at 7 pm July 18. The presentation will explore the importance of the ocean as a defining feature of our planet and the ways in which we are connected to the life of the ocean. DeMarco will examine how we can be good stewards of the critical ocean ecosystem which is an essential support system for humanity.

DeMarco’s passion and dedication for environmental issues led her to write “Pathways to Our Sustainable Future: A Global Perspective from Pittsburgh,” which explores positive pathways toward sustainability, based on 28 case studies from the Pittsburgh region.

DeMarco holds a doctorate in biology from the University of Pittsburgh and has spent a 30-year career in energy and environmental policy in both private and public sector positions. She served as executive director of the Rachel Carson Homestead Association and director of the Rachel Carson Institute at Chatham University. In 2017, she was honored with the Freudenburg Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences.

TikTok Kitchen will take place from 2-3 pm July 1 in the Community Room. The free program is open to students in grades 6-12. It is designed to try some of the best viral recipes from microwavable wonders to one-dish delights. No registration is required. Call Emily Fear at 412-741-6920 or email for more information.

The library’s Knitters Group will meet from 10:30 am to noon July 6 in the Colbert Room. People are invited to work on projects or learn about the hobby. The group is open to beginners and experienced knitters. It meets the first and third Wednesdays of the month. No registration is required. Call 412-741-6920 or email for more information.

Sewickley Story Walks continue through July 10. Grab the family and take a stroll through one of five different community StoryWalks set up throughout the Quaker Valley. A StoryWalk places pages from a children’s picture book along a walking path so that children and their caregivers may enjoy nature and reading together. Different summer-themed picture book stories are featured at each site.
